GLENDALE VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE CORPS. SERVING THE GLENDALE COMMUNITY SINCE 1973
|
Ryan Gunning
President/Chief
Glendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
JOB: Ryan Gunning is celebrating his 15th
year as part of the Glendale Volunteer
Ambulance Corps., five of those years as its
president, and has dedicated much of his
life to making the community of Glendale a
better place. Before joining the organization,
Gunning was an auxiliary officer in the 104th
Precinct and never really had an interest in
emergency medical service. “Then just from
meeting the people here and speaking with
them I got involved, and I learned to enjoy
it.” Currently the organization has
approximately 50 senior members and a
handful of junior members.
In addition to his current position, he is also a member of the Glendale Civilian Observation
Patrol (G-COP), Kiwanis, and is currently the Chairman of New York State Volunteer
Ambulance and Rescue Association.
RESIDENCE: Gunning has lived in Glendale for 27 years.
FAMILY: Gunning is married to his wife Samantha, and they have a 10-month-old daughter
also named Brooke.
FAVORITE MEMORY: During his time with the Glendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps.,
Gunning has delivered five babies. His first experience occurred when he delivered a baby
in the backseat of a car. “It was definitely a little nerve racking,” he said.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE: “The number one problem right now is recruitment and money,”
Gunning said. “It costs over $30,000 just for insurance. It has been a difficult couple of years
raising funds as worldwide events have taken precedence.” Members of the organization
have set schedules and commit to a certain number of hours of participation so it is difficult
to find members willing to make the commitment.
