EMS OVERVIEW
The Emergency Medical Services (“EMS”) as we
know it today began with the passing of the
1966 National Highway Safety Act. This
established the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (“NHTSA”) within the

today. The DOT estimates that the EMS system provides treatment and

billion annually.
The personnel that make up an ambulance corps must undertake a wide range of
training at various levels to perform a wide variety of jobs and tasks to assist the
public. Specifically, here at Glendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps (“GVAC”), to
be a driver you must be certified in emergency vehicle operations, CPR, and
First Aid. To be qualified as an EMT takes over a hundred hours of training.
This does not include all the additional hours spent taking the required continual
medical educations credits (“CME”) that EMTs must have to maintain their
certification levels.
You may be asking yourself why the lengthy dissertation on EMS. To let you,
the community know that to be an ambulance corps, it takes time, dedication,
and money to provide the ultimate level of care for all patients. Here at GVAC,
